Multicultural Night
Chatswood Parish Multicultural Evening
14 August 2010    7:00 p.m.
Harrington Hall

A MULTICULTURAL DELIGHT TO THE SENSES

The cold, breezy night of August 14th was no damper on the spirit and enthusiasm of both performers and audience alike at the Chatswood Parish Multicultural Night.  As the hall began to fill up, Pinoys were all over the place—rehearsing, attending to the sound and light effects, looking over the program, making last-minute fix-ups, making announcements, emceeing.

The performers and some members of the audience, donning colourful national costumes, a lot of which however were meant for the tropics,  braved the winter chill to showcase and enjoy  their country’s pride and joy—folk dances, vocal renditions and instrumental performances.

The audience was welcomed by the grace and skill of the Balinese dancer, followed by the Korean group dance.  The youth choir serenaded the crowd, showing off their beautiful voices that could earn an audition at any talent show.  Then in came the Filipino contingent, lovely and spectacular in their simplified version of the Santacruzan.  The “Ave Maria” kids, cute and dazzling in their fancy attires,  wowed and cheered up the audience amidst giggles and gasps of “how cute”.   You can always count on the kids to add zing to an already colourful event.

With the sights and sounds delighting the audience, it was time for a sampling of gastronomical “cocktail” delights from the participating countries.  After the tasty supper interval, the audience once more settled down to enjoy lilting music from the exotic Bamboo Instruments of Indonesia.  This reminded me of the remarkable Bulacan Bamboo Orchestra which amazed me in my long-gone youth back home.  After the exotic came the classical, with the Innomato Strings Ensemble playing, among others, a heavenly rendition of “Canon”.  (Am I already in heaven, or what?)

Well, every good thing must come to an end, and what a more fitting way than with the “Parade of Nations”-- participants in their native costumes parading on stage to farewell the audience for a multicultural night to remember.  Then came the Finale—everyone celebrating unity in diversity with “I Am Australian” in one voice.  “We are one, but we are many...”

A big congratulations to everyone for their participation, hard work, assistance, and support.  Well worth it and well done, Australians—good on ‘ya!

FCCP Disco Video

The community of the Filipino Chaplaincy of Chatswood Parish and their guests celebrated an evening of music and dance during the 2010 Family Disco held on Saturday, 31 August .  The dance floor was never empty during the four-hour event.  The DJ of the night, Dom Tagle, had music for people of all ages - from Latin to 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and hip hop.  Marek Pionka and his dancers at Step Up Dance Studio in Sydney provided the entertainment and got everyone dancing the Merengue.  Hanz Kosasih and Sandra Hurtado provided live music to the delight of all.  Sandra’s voice and Hanz’ accompaniment inspired the audience who sang and danced throughout their rendition.  Their friends showed others how to have fun on the dance floor.  The Avila family also showed their dancing prowess which left the audience in awe.  The performances and highlights of the disco were skilfully captured by Wil Paredes of Saxon Cole Photography.  And as always, OLD Parish provided the venue in support of the FCCP's initiative. Jeremy Tagle and the youth of Chatswood and FCCP worked hard to give our community a wholesome family event.  Their strong representation made it a truly enjoyable and successful event.  Congratulations!

The Filipino Chaplaincy

The Filipino Chaplaincy-Chatswood Parish (FCCP) is a church community of volunteers that work together to provide pastoral care to migrants, particularly the newly arrived migrants, within Chatswood and neighbouring suburbs.

The FCCP was established in February 2007 to provide pastoral care to migrants within Chatswood and neighbouring suburbs by:

·         helping  Filipino migrants and their families to stay connected with the Parish,

·         connecting newly arrived Filipino migrants with the FCCP community and other Parish communities, and

·         actively contributing to the life of the Parish

Membership

Members of the FCCP comprise Filipino migrants and their families that support the activities of the FCCP regardless of their place of residence.

A core group of volunteers coordinates the various activities of the FCCP through their specific ministries.   A lead coordinator convenes meetings of the FCCP and acts as the FCCP’s official representative.  The coordinators are bound by a set of Guidelines of Acceptable Behaviour.

Membership is encouraged through involvement and participation in the various Ministries of the FCCP namely:

·         Liturgy – organises the Masses, represents the FCCP at Parish liturgical activities and coordinates other FCCP liturgical projects

·         Music – provides music at Masses, choreographs performances and coordinates other FCCP activities

·         Outreach – communicates and promotes FCCP activities, maintains the FCCP contact list and information and coordinates inter-communal projects

·         Ways and Means – obtains resources and support for FCCP projects and oversights off-shore projects

·         Youth – encourages participation of young people in FCCP and Parish activities and provides peer support through youth networking and social functions and events

An advisory group comprising immediate past coordinators is established and consulted on various matters to ensure smooth transition and continuity of operations.

Filipino migrants and their families are welcome to register to FCCP to receive information or invitations to events and activities by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Operations

As a voluntary church-based group, the FCCP operates from the Our Lady of Dolours Parish, Chatswood and works closely with the Filipino Chaplain of the Diocese of Broken Bay.

The FCCP develops an annual program of activities in conjunction with the Parish calendar of activities and in consultation with the Filipino Chaplain.  The program is focused primarily on achieving the objectives of the FCCP although it may include projects that, in the view of the FCCP, are meritorious and deserve support.

The successful delivery of programs and activities of the FCCP is contingent on the amount of support it receives from volunteers, the Parish and the Diocese.   With this in mind, coordinators continuously work towards increasing participation by Filipinos in its activities in any capacity.

Pastoral Care

There are numerous ways in which the FCCP provides pastoral care services.  These are:

1.     FCCP-sponsored Mass

The FCCP sponsors a Mass every first Sunday of the month at 12noon at Our Lady of Dolours Parish, 94 Archer Street, Chatswood.  The Mass is in English and most songs are in Pilipino. Most families, particularly those who have children or family members that do not speak Pilipino, appreciate an inclusive “Taglish” Mass.  The regular Mass connects the Filipinos to the Parish.

2.     Fellowship

A fellowship is held after a FCCP-sponsored Mass within the vicinity of the church.  The fellowship enables Filipinos and their families to “meet and greet” and gives the newly arrived migrants an opportunity to connect with the FCCP and the Parish.

3.     Other activities

The FCCP’s annual program of activities is designed to nurture the spiritual life of its members.  These activities are determined by canvassing the preferences of the community and the priorities of the Parish and the Diocese.
